Back-to-School Safety Tips from TCSO

The new school year is almost underway. Some will be starting for the first time, while most will be returning to the "“Golden Rule Grind"”! With that in mind, Sheriff Donny Turner, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics proudly offers a few simple BACK-TO-SCHOOL tips:
  • First off, remind your child that he/she may not be the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious; and, most will make that extra effort to ensure that everyone feels as comfortable as possible on the first day.
  • Point out the positive aspects of starting school, for example: It will be fun. “You'll see old friends and meet new ones”, refresh positive memories about previous years, etc.…
  • Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school, or ride along with on the bus. Another suggestion for calming those “First-Day Jitters”, if you feel it is appropriate, would be to drive/take your child to school; and, pick him/her up on the first day.
BACKPACK SAFETY

  • Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
  • Avoid over-packing. Instead, organize the backpack to use all of its compartments.
  • Place heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight. Strained back muscles and sore necks are the result of using only one of the shoulder straps when carrying a backpack.
  • Consider a rolling backpack, if allowed. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load daily, or for a long distance. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up any stairways; and, they may be difficult to roll in our Georgia dirt/clay.
